“Maybe who we are isn’t so much about what we do, but rather what we’re capable of when we least expect it.” - Jodi Picoult (My Sister’s Keeper)

Are You Indispensalbe?
I just finished reading Linchpin Are You Indispensable? by Seth Godin. It was a great book and I recommend it to everyone. I actually found it on someones blog. I was reading an Ad agency blog and it caught my attention. So I went and bought it. It was a super easy read and was done in 3 days.
So what is a Linchpin?
The Linchpin is someone in life that is optimistic. The Linchpin does not wait around for opportunities to find them. They take matters into their own hands. One of the major traits of a Linchpin is being aware of how the world operates. They are smart because they learn to read their bosses and peers. If they are going to propose a plan or explain an idea, they first will figure out the best possible way to present it to the individual.
A Linchpin is also liked by most. They are outgoing and know how to socialize and interact with others. They are enthusiastic about their work. This is not just a job to them. This a career. This is their life. They do not just go to work to get paid. Because they get pleasure in offering something that will be useful for the company. The world works in funny ways for the Linchpin. Because after putting immense amounts of passion in their work the world slowly beings giving things back. The great thing is Linchpins never really can see it happening until they have a raise, a new job offer, or more vacation days. Because that was not their intent in the first place.
Because if you know your boss is fickle and likes things a certain way, why waste your time. Instead find a different approach that will work to please him.
“If the game is designed for you to lose, don’t play the game. Play a different one.”
Also another trait of the Linchpin was their ability to create art. Art can be anything. It could be a thought or an idea. What do you bring to the company? A Linchpin is an individual that works on a project and actually completes it. They know how to use their resources they are given take the information and put it together to give or present to their boss. So is this being creative? Yes but it is more..
Creativity - is personal, original, unexpected, and useful.
Unique creativity- requires domain knowledge, a position of trust, and the generosity to actually contribute. If you want to create a unique guitar riff, it sure helps if you’ve heard all the other guitar riffs on record. Unique implies that the creativity is focused and insightful.
Anyone can think of a random idea and make something. But what companies need are answers to problems. They need people to focus their energy and creativity. Take the knowledge and everything they know about the company, consumers, bosses, employees, and business models and create an innovative solution. You need to become good at your “craft” and find the answers they are looking for.
Those are just some of my thoughts about the book!
7 Abilities of the Linchpin
- Providing a unique interface between members of the organization.
- Delivering unique creativity.
- Managing a situation or organization of great complexity.
- Leading customers.
- Inspiring staff.
- Providing deep domain knowledge.
- Possessing a unique talent.
